Experience the gorgeous countryside between Sønderjylland’s northern fjords Haderslev Fjord and Aabenraa Fjord. Visit the tiny Island Årø, and experience the special island-atmosphere.

The Route is approx. 111 km. Price per person in shared double room: DKK 1624.

Day 1:
Arrival and check in at Hotel Europa, Aabenraa

Experience the historic town centre with its cobbled streets and coloured half-timbered houses. Take a stroll along the towns harbour and the sandy beach. Visit the exhibition at the art museum Brundlund Castle or cycle through the wood surrounding the town.
In the evening, you can enjoy dinner in the hotel’s restaurant or take the short walk to the centre of the town, where small restaurants are scattered along the pedestrian street.

Day 2: Approx. 60 km
Starting in Aabenraa, you will cycle via Løjtland and Haderslev Næs to the tiny island Årø, which is located in the Lillebælt (Little Belt). The routes takes you through the hilly landscape of Løjtland, past the cosy villages of Haderslev Næs and along the beautiful sandy beaches of the Bays of Genner and Diernæs.

It only takes the small ferry from Aarøsund to Årø seven min. to cross the Lillebælt. The ferry departs from Årø every hour from 12.40?? burde vi ikke fortælle hvornår den sejler fra Aarøsund under dag 2 og fra Årø under day 3

Upon arrival, there will be time to explore the gems of the island. You can get around the island by bike – a roundtrip is approx. 7 km. It is of course also possible to check in at the accommodation first. Visit the vineyard Årø Vingaard, where you can taste the local vine, and Aarø Bryg, where you can experience beer brewed on local ingredients.

Need to burn off more energy, try Parkgolf. Parkgolf is a hybrid between golf and mini golf and everyone can participate. The course on Årø has 9 holes.
For dinner, try one of the islands restaurants: Brummersgaard (close to your accommodation), Café Aarøgaard or take the ferry back to the mainland and visit the restaurant of the typical Danish seaside hotel Aarøsund Badehotel.

Day 3: Approx 65 km
After getting off the ferry, your trip goes along the Haderslev Fjord to the cathedral town of Haderslev.
Visit the cathedral, the old narrow streets in the monastery neighbourhood and enjoy your lunch at one of the cosy cafés or restaurants in the town, or what about a picnic in the town park, Dampark, down by the natural pond.

If you have time, we recommend a boat tour on Haderslev Dam - one of the largest lakes in Sønderjylland. A roundtrip with the electrically propelled boat takes approx. 1½ hours and gives you the perfect opportunity to get close to the birds and wildlife.

After visiting Haderslev, you head south along the Baltic Sea Route – National Cycling Route 8, to Genner, from where you will cycle on towards The Ancient Road Hærvejen. For centuries, travellers, armies, oxen drivers and pilgrims have used Hærvejen on their travels through Jutland. Along the route, you can experience churches, Viking runic stones and an impressive scenery. South of Rødekro, you will leave the Hærvejen and follow small roads through the forests of Aabenraa to the centre of the town, where you can collect your luggage at Hotel Europa.
